Fickle but occasionally rewarding beach break sitting at the mouth of the Óbidos Lagoon, about 8km north of Caldas da Rainha on Portugal's Zona Oeste coast. It needs a solid W to NW groundswell to fire, ideally 3-5ft, with offshore winds from the east. Tidal movement around the lagoon mouth can shape or kill the banks quickly, so timing your session matters. When the banks align on a good swell, expect fast, punchy peaks with short barrels. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers looking to escape the Peniche circus, though weekends bring a noticeable crowd. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: fickle, banks shift often. Arrive early on weekends, and check conditions before committing since onshore winds dominate and the break can close out fast in bigger swells.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are relatively quiet, making midweek sessions noticeably more pleasant. Weekends draw crowds, particularly as surfers spill over from the saturated Peniche lineup 20km south. Localism is not reported as heavy, but a respectful approach in the water is always warranted.

Access & Facilities

Foz do Arelho village is accessible by car from the N360 road. Parking near the beach is available. Basic amenities including cafes and accommodation are in the village. The lagoon adds a scenic backdrop but watch for currents near the mouth during tidal movement. No significant urchin or reef hazard given the sandy bottom.

Nearby Alternatives

When Foz do Arelho's banks are blown out or flat, Peniche (20km south) offers multiple reef and beach options including Supertubos for the committed surfer. São Martinho do Porto, a sheltered bay just south, can offer calmer conditions for beginners when the Atlantic is too raw.
