A reliable beachbreak 5km south of Ericeira's reef circuit, Foz de Lizandro produces shifting A-frame peaks across a wide sandy bay with a rivermouth left at the south end that can hollow out nicely on a clean SW push. NW to WNW swells are the primary driver, though the window stretches from S through NW. E winds keep it tidy. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot, and the wave starts functioning from around 3ft, handling up to 8ft before closing out. Beginners and intermediates both find room here, and on small days the bodyboard and learn-to-surf crowds fill the water. Bottom: sand. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium. Watch out for a persistent northward drift at mid-to-high tide that can push you toward rocks on the north end of the beach, and treat water near the rivermouth with caution after rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw crowds, particularly in summer when learn-to-surf camps and bodyboarders colonise the peak. The local vibe is genuinely welcoming, and the shifting sandbanks spread surfers out enough that patience is rarely punished. Midweek and dawn patrol sessions are noticeably quieter. If the main peak is stacked, work the secondary peaks north or south.

Access & Facilities

A large free car park sits directly behind the beach. Lifeguards are on duty in summer. Bars and restaurants within walking distance serve fresh fish. Water quality is generally fair, but avoid the rivermouth zone for a day or two after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Foz closes out in bigger swells, the reef breaks of Ericeira proper are worth the short drive north. Pedra Branca and Coxos handle size and offer far longer, more defined rides for experienced surfers. On tiny days when Foz goes flat, sheltered harbour options around Ericeira can squeeze out a few rideable waves.
