Coxos is Europe's most celebrated right-hand reef point, stacking up along a shallow lava shelf on the Ericeira coast roughly 50km north of Lisbon. NW to W swells are the engine here, peeling fast and hollow from deep water onto rocky shelves, concentrating power low in the wave face in a way that draws comparisons to Hawaiian reef breaks. E wind is the offshore, low to mid tide is ideal, and 4-12ft is the working range, though it holds clean faces well past that. This is advanced-to-expert territory only: the takeoff zone is tight, the reef is shallow, urchins are everywhere, and the rips are serious. Bottom: lava reef. Season: October through March. Consistency: medium, but firing when conditions align. Come mid-week and at dawn if you want any kind of breathing room in the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Forty surfers in the water before 6:30am on a solid swell day is not an exaggeration. The local crew is tight, experienced, and protective of what is legitimately their home break. Humility matters here. WCT credentials earn you nothing without respect. If the point is heaving with bodies, the wave two kilometres north at São Lourenço runs similarly and is often far emptier.

Access & Facilities

Dirt parking above the point. Entry and exit are technical: there is no easy paddle-out channel, getting caught inside on a set is dangerous, and the lava reef is unforgiving on a wipeout. Free camping is available nearby. Ribeira d'Ilhas, a more accessible right-hander inside the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, is a short drive south.

Nearby Alternatives

Pedra Branca, south toward central Ericeira, trades punchy barrels for longer walls and handles a wider range of conditions. Ribeira d'Ilhas is the go-to for anything too big or crowded at Coxos and suits a broader skill range.
