Thirty kilometres of sand south of the Tejo River makes Costa da Caparica the backbone of Lisbon's surf scene, with groynes along the northern stretch locking in reliable sandbars that work from waist-high to double overhead. A wide S-to-NW swell window and NE to E offshore winds mean something is almost always breaking, and the beach handles everything from long, walling rides to short, hollow punches depending on where you set up. Suitable for all abilities, though the groyne peaks draw crowds on weekends and the rips beside the jetties deserve respect when size builds. Bottom: sand. Season: September to May. Consistency: high. Water quality is fair at the northern end and improves as you move south, so paddling out further down the beach is a reasonable move when the town-side peaks are maxed or messy.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend pressure at the northern groyne peaks is real, expect a full lineup from late morning onward. The vibe is mostly chilled with mutual respect, but 30 km of beach means easy escape: walk south, find a sandbar, and the crowd thins fast. Local humility is generally healthy here.

Access & Facilities

Take the A2 south from Lisbon and follow the IC20 directly to the coast. Car parks are positioned along the beach road. Camping is available nearby. Food and rentals are easy to find in the town. Water quality improves heading south away from the urban northern end.

Nearby Alternatives

When Caparica is blown out or maxed, Carcavelos to the north is one of Portugal's most consistent beachbreaks and shelters a bit more from strong NW wind. Further afield, Guincho offers quality beachbreak conditions and is worth checking when the wind swings more northerly.
