A submerged reef peak sitting south of Lisbon near Sesimbra, Bicas produces a faster, more hollow left and a fatter right into the channel when SW to NW swell pushes into the coast. The left off the main peak is the standout: steep, walled, and capable of throwing genuine tubes on the inside section, though shallow rocks lurk at low tide. Easterly winds clean it up and the spot handles swell from under 1m up to 4m-plus, though it only becomes genuinely worth the drive somewhere between 1m and 1.5m. At high tide the wave slows noticeably, as it gets overhead, the power and paddle-out effort push it firmly into intermediate-to-advanced territory. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. A long left breaks to the right of the beach and offers a fatter, less critical ride when the main peak is too shallow or too crowded at low tide.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is notably mellow compared to spots closer to Lisbon, and the drive filters out casual punters. Weekends can pull a crowd at the main peak, especially when conditions are on. The secondary left to the right of the beach is a practical alternative when numbers build up. No localism issues flagged, but standard lineup courtesy applies.

Access & Facilities

From Lisbon, take the A2 south and exit toward Sesimbra, then follow EN378 until the NATO base, turning right toward Lagoa de Albufeira. Continue through Alfarim and Aldeia do Meco, the beach road is signed. Free parking on site, camping is available nearby. No significant pollution or hazard flags beyond the shallow reef sections at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

If Bicas is too small or the swell direction is off, the long, consistent beachbreaks of Costa da Caparica to the north offer more reliable options across a wider swell window. Sesimbra bay itself provides a sheltered alternative in larger or more northerly swells.
