A long right-hand point that rewards the walk out to the rock ledge with generous 200-500m rides when a solid S to SW swell fills in. Located on the Panama Pacific coast near San Carlos, it works best at low to mid tide, when the wave peels cleanly down the point in manageable, fun sections. NW offshores clean it up. At 2-6ft it suits improvers and intermediates comfortably, bigger swells push it toward the top of that range and sharpen the pace. The lineup rarely gets crowded, which gives learners room to breathe. Bottom: rock point. Season: S hemisphere swell season, May through October. Consistency: medium. Note that an estuary sits nearby, so surf after dry spells rather than after heavy rain to avoid murky water and runoff. Booties are worth bringing for the rocky walk out to the point.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rio Mar sees light traffic by Panama Pacific standards. The walk to the point deters casual crowds, meaning you'll often find a relaxed, uncrowded lineup. Rio Mar Surf operates lessons, rentals, and tours from here, so expect a handful of beginners on smaller days, but nothing that creates real pressure in the water.

Access & Facilities

Plan for a long walk across the rock ledge to reach the take-off zone. Booties protect your feet and are strongly recommended. A car park is available on site and camping is possible nearby. Rio Mar Surf handles gear rentals if you're travelling light. After heavy rain, the adjacent estuary dumps runoff into the lineup, so pick your sessions during dry weather windows.

Nearby Alternatives

When Rio Mar is maxed out or the tide is wrong, Corona down the coast offers similar right-point character. For more power, Punta Palmar's fast, heavy righthanders fire at high tide on bigger swells. Hawaiisito provides accessible peaks with a left bias if you want a change of direction.
