A hollow take-off in front of the condo towers kicks off a long, peeling right that eventually mellows into a smooth wall suited to both shortboards and longboards at Playa Serena, near Coronado on Panama's Pacific coast. The wave needs S to SW swell at 3-10ft to fire, and low to mid tide keeps the sections punchy and connected. NW offshores are your friend here. Because it depends heavily on sand distribution, the break is fickle, which means when it does light up, the lineup fills fast even though the point is rarely crowded on weekdays. Bottom: sand-over-point. Season: May through November. Consistency: low. Check the forecast carefully before making the drive, and be realistic about skipping it on small or onshore days when the shape falls apart quickly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends at Playa Serena can get genuinely crowded, driven largely by Panama City surfers making the roughly one-hour drive out. Weekday mornings are your best shot at space. The wave is fickle enough that a flat spell keeps the crowds thin, but a good S swell on a Saturday will pack the point. Treat the locals with respect, read the pecking order, and you will be fine.

Access & Facilities

Turn off the Pan-American Highway into Playa Coronado, follow the road toward Playa Serena, park on the paved road (paid parking), and follow the walkway to the point. There are no facilities on site. Leave nothing visible in your car. The area near the condo towers is your landmark for the take-off zone.

Nearby Alternatives

If Playa Serena is not breaking, Rocky Point at Punta Barco sits between Tetas and Coronado and can deliver when the swell size is dialed in just right. Jefrys in San Carlos offers long, fast right-handers on the same swell window and is worth a look if you have the time to drive further down the coast.
