Coral reef peaks with a Caribbean edge, Isla Grande sits off Panama's Atlantic coast near Portobello, about 2.5 hours from Panama City. The wave picks up NE to E swell, works best at mid tide, and runs 3-10ft before it gets too heavy for the coral bottom. Crowds are thin during the week and light on weekends, but the reef demands respect. Bottom: coral reef. Season: NE swell season, Nov through Mar, with occasional E groundswell pulse year-round. Consistency: moderate, dependent on Atlantic swell windows reaching this sheltered stretch of coast. Bring reef booties if your feet matter to you, the coral is sharp and unforgiving on a wipeout. Most rides are short, under 50m, though a good swell can push walls out to 150m with punchy sections worth hunting.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the emptier lineups in the Panama Pacific and Caribbean zone. Weekdays you may have it to yourself. Weekends attract a handful of visiting surfers. Localism is low, but the island has a tight community, so show up with good manners and calypso-level chill.

Access & Facilities

Drive from Panama City toward Colon on the new highway, turn toward Portobello at the Rey supermarket, continue through Portobello to the Isla Grande boat lot. A short boat ride crosses the strait to the island. Cabins and small hotels are walkable to the surf. Good seafood on the island. No surf shop or rescue infrastructure, bring your own gear.

Nearby Alternatives

Portobello and the surrounding Caribbean coastline have scattered reef and beach setups that catch similar NE swell. When Isla Grande is flat, check spots closer to Colon or time a drive back toward the Pacific side for consistent reef and beach break options.
