A long left point break at the edge of a fur seal reserve on Namibia's remote Skeleton Coast, Cape Cross delivers rare consistency in one of Africa's most isolated surf zones. S to W swells at 2-8ft with easterly offshores are the ideal setup, best from mid to high tide when the submerged reef organises into clean, fun lines running 200-500m along the point. Intermediate surfers will find plenty to work with, and crowds are almost never a factor out here. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: year-round, best when S to SW groundswell is running. Consistency: high. Pay the park entry fee ($1.50 per person, $1.50 per vehicle) and respect park officials, because surfing has been banned here before and could be again.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rarely an issue given the remoteness and the entry fee barrier. Park officials hold real authority here and have historically been hostile to surfers. Keep interactions respectful, follow all park rules, and do not push boundaries. A low-key attitude protects access for everyone.

Access & Facilities

Cape Cross is 130km from Swakopmund on salt roads. There is no parking directly at the break and no surf facilities on site. A small restaurant operates at the seal factory. The nearest basic campsite is roughly 40km south at the mile 72 marker. Bring everything you need, including food, water, and fuel. The smell from 100,000 seals is substantial.

Nearby Alternatives

Graveyards and Factory Point offer additional lefts further down the same point when Main Break isn't doing it, though Factory Point is considered the weakest of the three and the smell is even more pronounced. A beachbreak near the wreck of the South West Sea and options at Torra Bay are available further along the coast for those exploring north.
