A ten-minute ferry ride from Mazatlan delivers you to a long golden beach with a surprising variety of waves, from A-frame sandbar peaks to a rare right-hand point called Escollera. Optimal conditions are a solid SW to SSE swell, 4-8ft, with N to NE offshores keeping faces clean at any tide, though each section rewards different tidal phases. The range of breaks across the beach handles everyone from beginners logging their first waves to experienced surfers hunting the more critical sections, and crowds spread out enough that it rarely feels locked. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: April through October. Consistency: reliable when south swell is running. Pack for a full day because the open-air beach restaurants along the shore are worth staying for well after the last session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Mazatlan has a large and active local surf community and Stone Island is their home break. Crowds are moderate and spread across a generous stretch of beach, so it rarely feels claustrophobic, but humility and respect in the lineup go a long way. Pushing priority at the point or dropping in on locals is not the move here.

Access & Facilities

Catch the short ferry across the harbor from Mazatlan, roughly ten minutes. Once on the island, open-air restaurants line the beach and are the main reason to stay past noon. Water quality is fair given the proximity to the harbor, worth noting if you have cuts or open wounds. Bring your own wax and sunscreen as gear supplies on the island are limited.

Nearby Alternatives

If Stone Island is blown out or flat, the Mazatlan city beach breaks are a quick ferry ride back and can pick up similar south swell. Further north along the Sinaloa coast, additional beach breaks offer less crowd pressure when south swells push through.
