A consistent left-hand reef break on the northern cape of Mazatlan's El Centro, Los Pinos organizes S to SW swell into zipping lines that break first over shallow rock before spilling into a small pink-sand bay. Best on a SW, SSW, or S swell from chest high to double overhead, mid to high tide, with E or SE wind keeping the face clean. It can handle S wind in a pinch but the form softens as size pushes past double overhead, which at least thins the lineup. Intermediate to advanced surfers will feel at home here, complete beginners should look elsewhere given the shallow rock takeoff zone and moderate crowd that packs into a tight peak. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: April through October. Consistency: regional classic among Mazatlan's breaks. Park off Paseo Claussen, stay aware of the shallow reef on the initial section, and note that water quality is only fair given proximity to the harbor entrance.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lineup can be empty or nearly so, but weekends and any solid swell bring a moderate crowd into a tight takeoff zone. Locals call it doable but the zone is compact, meaning priority matters. Paddle out, read the room, and wait your turn. Respect here is non-negotiable.

Access & Facilities

Park off Paseo Claussen and walk to the beach. The wave is visible from the north when it's running well. Water quality is only fair due to harbor proximity, so rinse off after and keep cuts clean. No notable hazards beyond the shallow rocks on the initial reef section.

Nearby Alternatives

Mazatlan has a stretch of breaks running from Punta Brueja south to Isla Piedra, so if Los Pinos is blown out or maxed, there are options along that corridor. When the swell is small or the wind is poor, the region's beachbreaks will offer more forgiving conditions for those not ready for the reef.
