Optimal conditions are a proper SW or SSW swell, NE or E wind, mid tide, and size from waist-high up to double overhead. Spring and summer are the sweet spot, when Southern Hemisphere swells are pushing hardest. Intermediate surfers can handle it on the right day, advanced riders will want actual size before it gets interesting. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: April to October. Consistency: moderate. Water quality is fair given the in-town location, so avoid it after heavy rain.
Locals dominate the main takeoff zone, especially when any real swell arrives. The vibe is doable if you show respect, wait your turn, and don't snake. Don't expect waves handed to you in the peak zone on a good day. Crowd levels track swell size directly: flat spells are mellow, proper SW swells pack the lineup.
