A rocky headland point that juts SW into the Pacific gives El Camaron its best asset: direct exposure to S, SSW, and SW swells with no island shadow blocking the energy. Located in Sinaloa, Mainland Mexico, it peels left along a rock shelf at the base of a sea cliff, typically running waist to chest-high, soft, and slow. The wave builds momentum as it goes, so on the right board it delivers genuine rippable sections. Optimal conditions are a proper SW or SSW swell, NE or E wind, mid tide, and size from waist-high up to double overhead. Spring and summer are the sweet spot, when Southern Hemisphere swells are pushing hardest. Intermediate surfers can handle it on the right day, advanced riders will want actual size before it gets interesting. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: April to October. Consistency: moderate. Water quality is fair given the in-town location, so avoid it after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals dominate the main takeoff zone, especially when any real swell arrives. The vibe is doable if you show respect, wait your turn, and don't snake. Don't expect waves handed to you in the peak zone on a good day. Crowd levels track swell size directly: flat spells are mellow, proper SW swells pack the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Park in the lot just north of the point. Paid parking, so bring cash. The break is in town, meaning food and water are close by. Watch the rock shelf on the paddle-out and landing, especially on bigger days. Urchins and slippery rock are realistic hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Camaron is too small or blown out, Sinaloa's coast offers other beach and point setups that respond to similar S and SW swells. Explore the region on big Southern Hemisphere pulses when multiple spots along this stretch of Mainland Mexico come alive simultaneously.
