A warbled, fickle beach break on Oaxaca's wild Pacific frontier, Zipolite sits a couple of miles west of Puerto Angel, tucked into a stretch of jungled coastline that rarely sees consistent surf. SSE through SW swells are the ticket, best from March through October, with N or NE winds cleaning up the faces before onshore chop sets in around 11am. Waist to head-high is the realistic sweet spot, though the community reports data suggests it needs 8-10ft of swell to really start moving. Forecasts rate it beginner to advanced, but the wave's inconsistency means you need patience and time to spare. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: March to October. Consistency: low to moderate, highly wind-dependent. Dawn patrol is non-negotiable here since conditions deteriorate fast once the sea breeze fills in, so be in the water by sunrise or forget it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate but manageable. The local vibe is described as doable, mellow enough if you show basic respect. The remoteness of this stretch keeps the lineup from filling up the way Puerto Escondido breaks do. Weekends pull a few more surfers but nothing heavy.

Access & Facilities

Easy access along the 2km beach. Basic cabaña accommodation lines the shore and rates are cheap. The beach is famous as a nudist-friendly zone, which surprises some visitors. Sunburn is the main hazard, bring sun protection. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

San Agustinillo sits just up the coast and is worth checking alongside Zipolite since both break on similar swells and conditions. Puerto Escondido to the north is the region's benchmark wave when you need something more reliable and powerful.
