Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido delivers some of the heaviest beachbreak barrels on the planet, driven by a deep offshore trench that focuses and amplifies southerly swells into thick, guillotine lips that unload close to shore. SW and S-SW swells from 4ft up to well overhead are the target, with ENE to E offshores holding until around 10-11am before thermals kick in. Rights break best on due SW swell and can hold faces up to 40-60ft on the biggest days. This wave is for experienced surfers only: committed barrel riders and big-wave specialists who understand consequence. The lineup is always heavy, always watched, and full of skilled locals and visiting pros. Bottom: sand over a canyon. Season: March-October peak, year-round viable. Consistency: high. Dawn patrol is non-negotiable here. Get in before the wind goes onshore and before the crowd builds beyond reason.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is always crowded with talented surfers, and the local chargers carry real authority here. Intimidating by design. Avoid posturing, sit in position, and let the sets come to you. Above 8ft, the crowd thins fast. December holiday periods bring inexperienced surfers into the mix, making the lineup chaotic and less rewarding.

Access & Facilities

Direct beach access from the hotels and restaurants lining Zicatela. Parking is plentiful. Lifeguards are posted and they earn it. Rips are powerful and hold you in the impact zone. Board repair is available in town. Water quality is generally clean but near an estuary. Theft from the beach is a reported hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Zicatela is maxing out or shutting down, La Punta to the west offers mellower lefts that work for a wider skill range. Carizalillo is a protected rocky bay with more forgiving waves for all levels on smaller swells. To the east, the rivermouths of Colotepec offer reliable beachbreak peaks worth investigating when the main beach is a washing machine.
