Crowd & Localism
The lineup is usually light. It sits outside the Puerto Escondido tourist orbit enough to see far fewer visiting surfers than nearby Zicatela or La Punta. Respect the locals who do show up and don't park on private land.
A sand-bottom rivermouth on the Oaxacan coast, Cerro Hermosa picks up south and SW groundswells that wrap into a sheltered peak with clean faces when the NNE offshore kicks in. It works best at 3-6ft, holding shape across the sandbar before closing out in bigger surf. December is the standout month, with rideable waves roughly 73% of the time, though summer south swells also keep it honest. Intermediate surfers get the most out of it: enough push in the wave to practice turns and the occasional barrel section, without the consequence of a heavy reef. The crowd is thin most days, but sharks are a documented hazard in rivermouth environments here, so dawn patrol timing and staying out of murky post-rain water is legitimate advice, not paranoia. Bottom: sand. Season: November through February, with a secondary window in June and July. Consistency: moderate to good.

Closest international gateway is Puerto Escondido airport. The break requires a short drive south along the coast highway. No permanent rental infrastructure on-site, so come stocked. Bring your own water, wax, and a basic first-aid kit. The shark hazard is real in riverbmouth zones along this coast.
When Cerro Hermosa is flat or blown out, Puerto Escondido's Zicatela offers a consistent heavy beach break for experienced surfers, while La Punta nearby provides a more forgiving right-hand point for intermediate sessions.
