A short, punchy right-hand sand-bottom point north of Salina Cruz, Playa El Mojon sits in front of an old Oaxacan hacienda and delivers the kind of open barrel sections that make the Oaxacan coast worth the effort. When the bars stack up correctly in a good season, a medium-sized, long-period S to SSW swell threads clean tubes from the top of the point through the inside. Size window is tight: too big and it closes out, too small and it never wakes up. Chest-high to overhead is the sweet spot, and light winds are essential. Advanced surfers only, though the moderate crowd stays manageable precisely because the spot is protected and less broadcast than neighboring Barra de la Cruz. Bottom: sand. Season: summer through fall. Consistency: swell-period dependent, fickle outside the window. A guide is either required or strongly recommended here, so come prepared or don't come at all.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowds and a manageable local vibe, mostly because access is filtered. The spot sits down an unmarked road, and turning up unannounced is a bad idea on multiple levels. Localism is rated doable but respect the protocols: surf with a guide, read the room, wait your turn. The comparative quiet here is a direct result of people not broadcasting it.

Access & Facilities

Access requires navigating an unmarked road, a 4x4 helps but is not mandatory. A guide is strongly recommended and in some circumstances required. Water quality is clean. No formal facilities on site. Stock up on water and food before heading out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mojon's swell window isn't cooperating, Barra de la Cruz is the obvious nearby alternative for a longer, more consistent right-hand point, though expect significantly more crowd pressure. The broader Salina Cruz and Huatulco area holds numerous other points that activate on the same S and SSW groundswells, so a guide familiar with the region can route you to what's working on a given day.
