A headland-sheltered left point at the south end of Playa Zicatela, La Punta is the sanity-preserving alternative when Puerto Escondido's main beach is detonating beyond reason. SSE through SW swell wraps around the point and produces long, roping lefts with barrel sections, steep walls, ramps, and crisp shoulders stacked into a single ride. E and SE winds keep it clean all day, and when Zicatela blows out, La Punta holds shape hours longer. Best from chest-high to double overhead, and the headland's refracting effect smooths out raw swell energy that would otherwise close out. Works on all tides. Season runs March through October. Consistent when swell is in the water. Water is warm year-round, boardshorts are standard. Bottom is sand over rock, so wipeouts near the point can get rocky. Arrive at dawn to steal a few waves before the pack assembles, because this lineup draws a crowd and the locals run it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most competitive lineups on the Oaxacan coast. Locals are possessive and the vibe is heavy. Forecasts rate localism at the intimidating end of the scale. Read the pecking order before paddling for waves, surf respectfully, and do not snake sets. Weekends and peak season compress the crowd further. Dawn patrol is the most effective strategy to get quality waves with less friction.

Access & Facilities

Easily reached on foot, by bike, or by bus from Zicatela. Food, water, and accommodation are all within a short walk along the strip. No special access required. Rocks near the point are the primary hazard, check the shoreline before paddling out and pick your entry carefully. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Punta is too crowded or the swell too small, Zicatela further up the beach fires on the same swell window and rewards experienced surfers willing to deal with heavier consequences. Carrizalillo, a sheltered cove a short ride west, offers a more forgiving wave and a calmer social environment for days when you want performance without the pressure.
