A protected cove just northwest of Puerto Escondido town, Carrizalillo delivers mellow right and left-handers that peel along steep headlands on either side of a palm-lined bay. It needs a solid SSE to SW swell in the 3-6ft range to properly light up, and a N to NE wind keeps conditions clean. Both peaks break over a mix of sand and scattered rocks, with a deep channel on each side making the paddle-out manageable even on bigger days. This is primarily a beginner-to-intermediate wave, and its sheltered geography draws a steady crowd of learners, surf school groups, and longboarders. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks. Season: March through October. Consistency: moderate, dependent on south swells tracking into the cove. Access requires descending a significant flight of stairs from the clifftop, so pack light and keep your board leash tight on the way down.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowd most days, heavier when conditions are good. Surf school groups are a constant presence, so be patient with beginners and watch for errant longboards swinging wide. Localism is described as doable, mellow vibe overall, but the usual respect protocols apply: don't drop in, give way, and don't paddle for every set wave when the cove is packed.

Access & Facilities

A staircase descent from the clifftop gets you to the beach. It's an easy spot to find near Carrizalillo village northwest of Puerto Escondido. Palapas line the beach and food and drinks are available. Surf instructors operate here. Roger is a well-regarded local instructor for those looking for lessons. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Carrizalillo is maxed out or too crowded, the better surfers in the group will want to check Zicatela, Puerto Escondido's powerful beach break a short drive away, though it's a significant step up in difficulty. On smaller days, the broader Puerto Escondido area has additional beach peaks worth exploring for progression surfing.
