A powerful, hollow sandbar peak in Huatulco Bay punches well above its weight for this stretch of the Oaxacan coast, sitting roughly halfway between Puerto Escondido and Salina Cruz. It picks up SW and NW groundswells cleanly, starts firing around 3ft and handles overhead-plus juice without breaking down, producing fast, hollow walls that can run 50-150m on a standard day and stretch beyond 300m when conditions align. Offshore winds from the NE keep the faces clean, mid-coast Mexican wind patterns mean early mornings are almost always your best window before the onshore fills in. This is an experienced-surfer wave: the power is real, the sand shifts seasonally, and the barrel sections will catch you off guard if you underestimate them. Bottom: sandbar. Season: peaks May through September with the S/SW swell season. Consistency: moderate but reliable when groundswell is running. Weekdays you might find a near-empty lineup, weekends draw local crowds from Huatulco, so time your sessions accordingly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are relaxed with few surfers in the water. Weekends flip the script, particularly during peak swell season, when Huatulco-based surfers and travelers descend. Localism isn't reported as heavy, but standard respect protocols apply: sit wide, wait your turn, don't snake sets.

Access & Facilities

Huatulco's Santa Cruz area is the base. The town has hotels, restaurants, and some surf rental options. Water quality in the bay is generally good. Watch for rip currents on bigger swells near the sandbar, and check the bar shape before paddling out after heavy rain reshuffles the bottom.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Jolla is blown out or the bar is off, Puerto Escondido's Zicatela is a few hours northwest and offers beachbreak barrels for the same swell window. Salina Cruz to the southeast holds powerful pointbreak options when a solid SW groundswell is running.
