A long, dredging right-hand point on the Oaxacan coast, Barra de la Cruz became globally known after the 2006 Rip Curl Pro Search event broadcast 12-second barrel rides to the world. The headland fang points SE, cleaving S and SSE swells into tubes at the top of the point that give way to steep, walling rights running deep into the bay. SW swell produces a slightly less dredgy but still excellent version of the same ride. Best from chest-high to double-overhead, April through September. Offshore winds run NW to W. Suited to intermediate and advanced surfers who can handle a shallow sand-and-rock bottom and long paddle-back after long rides. Bottom: sand over scattered rock. Season: April-September. Consistency: medium, needs a solid S or SE pulse to turn on. Pay the small village access fee before paddling out, and go at dawn if crowds concern you.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The 2006 contest exposure put Barra on the global map and the lineup filled up quickly. Crowds have since thinned as traveling surfers drifted east toward more consistent options, but it still gets busy when swell arrives. Locals are described as welcoming, though that vibe is reportedly growing in intensity as pressure builds on good days. Be patient, take your turns, and respect the village access arrangement.

Access & Facilities

A long dirt track leads down from the highway to the beach. Pay the village access charge at the gate. Basic beach camping is available. Facilities are simple: there are cabanas catering to traveling surfers. Bring water and food for the day. Estuary and river proximity can affect water quality after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Barra isn't firing, Punta Conejo to the west is the region's premier pointbreak and handles a broader swell window. La Ventosa near Salina Cruz offers highly consistent beachbreak peaks on smaller, more frequent swells. Punta Chivo is accessible through a small fishing village and worth checking if the point needs a rest.
