A wrapping left off the same reef as Sultans, Honky's sits roughly 100 yards south in the Maldives and delivers one of the region's more technical rides. S to SE swells bend in toward the island from takeoff and keep wrapping almost 90 degrees by the time you kick out. NE to N winds are ideal. The wave works best at low tide and from head-high to double-overhead, with the inside section known as Fred's Ledge regularly running two feet bigger than the takeoff. Intermediate to advanced surfers handle it fine on uncrowded days, but expect moderate boat traffic, slightly less than the neighboring Sultans lineup. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to September. Consistency: reliable when south swells are running. The lateral currents beside this wave are among the gnarliest in the area, so lock in a solid visual reference on land before paddling out or you will drift fast.
Crowd levels are moderate and entirely boat-dependent. Sultans next door draws the bigger numbers, leaving Honky's comparatively quieter most sessions. On weekends, a small crew from Malé may show, but the vibe stays mellow and welcoming. Respect boat positioning in the channel and call your waves early given how the swell wraps.
Access is boat-only, so you need a live-aboard or resort transfer already sorted. The jump-off is straightforward from a well-positioned boat. The main hazard is the wrap itself pushing you toward the island shorebreak, combined with strong lateral currents. Set a clear land reference before entering the water. Bring reef booties if your feet are soft and a helmet is worth considering on bigger days at the ledge.
Sultans, 100 yards north on the same reef, is the go-to when Honky's currents are too demanding or when you want a more consistent high-performance option. Jailbreaks and Pasta Point offer contrasting rights on nearby atolls if the south swell isn't doing enough to activate this left.
