A long right-hand reef pass in Laamu Atoll, Yin Yang is arguably the most consistent wave in this part of the Maldives and rewards surfers who can handle its punishing inside section. SE to SW swell feeds the break, with the outside wall typically offering mellow, deep-water rides that are manageable even in cross-shore conditions. Westerly winds clean up the inside barrel, which wraps into one of the most critical sections in the Maldives with the potential to deliver three consecutive barrels on a single ride. This is an expert-only wave: the uneven reef and heavy inside closeout section will punish hesitation. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through September. Consistency: high. Bring a step-up for when the SE swell pushes past 6ft, and make sure you know where the channel is before committing to the inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Access is boat-only and the atoll sits far enough south to stay quiet even during peak season. Weekends see the lineup near-empty. The barrier to entry is logistical rather than social: reaching Laamu Atoll requires a charter or resort-based trip, which keeps the lineup manageable. Respect the order in the lineup regardless.

Access & Facilities

No paddle-out from shore. All access is by boat, typically from a liveaboard charter or a resort like Six Senses Laamu or COMO Maalifushi. No parking, no facilities at the break itself. Hazards are minimal in terms of pollution, but the uneven reef inside demands rubber on your feet. Carry a spare leash.

Nearby Alternatives

When the NW wind kills the inside at Yin Yang, paddle into the pass to Mada's for a different look. If the swell nudges past 4ft, two east-facing passes on the atoll begin breaking and are worth investigating from the boat. Inside Mikado offers a perfect wraparound right from mid tide onward when you need something more forgiving.
