A bending, wrapping left-hand reef that earns its reputation through speed rather than forgiveness, Chickens sits roughly half a mile off Kanifinolhu island in the North Malé Atoll, accessible only by boat. SE swell is the trigger, with the wave starting to show at 3-5ft and holding shape up to 10ft-plus. N or NW winds keep it clean. SW wind kills the wave fast. Three to six bowl sections unload depending on size and swell direction, each capable of throwing a genuine barrel, and regular-footers riding vertically will find the wave bends back toward them throughout the ride. The crowd fluctuates dramatically with boat traffic: the lineup can go from packed to empty inside an hour. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to September. Consistency: high on SE swell pulses. The name comes from a former chicken farm on the adjacent island, not from the skill of surfers who ride it.
Boat traffic controls crowd levels entirely. Safari boats and resort charters pile in when conditions light up, so mornings before the fleet mobilises offer the cleanest windows. Friday brings local surfers out from Malé. The local crew is welcoming, and Chickens sits far enough north that it sees less daily local pressure than Sultans or Honkys closer to the capital.
Boat access only. No beach, no parking, no facilities on the water. Plan board transport carefully: reef cuts and strong currents are the primary hazards. Bring reef booties if your feet are soft. Staying positioned on the point is a constant shoulder-burning battle against current, pick a land reference on the island and stay locked to it.
When Chickens is blown out by SW wind, the rights at nearby Meerufenfushi Corner can hold up on major SE swells with S wind. Further south, the Sultans and Honkys combination in the South Malé Atoll offers a reliable backup when the north zone is compromised.
