A submerged reef break in Gaafu Alifu (North Huvadhoo Atoll), Koodhoo delivers scattered but quality surf to those making the long boat run south from Malé. SE to SW swells at 2-8ft with westerly offshore winds give it its best shape, and it works across all tides, though consistency is low enough that it functions more as a bonus score than a trip anchor. Intermediate surfers will find it manageable, and the isolation means crowds are essentially a non-issue. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: SE swell window, southern hemisphere winter months. Consistency: low. Come with patience and a quiver that covers everything from waist-high opportunistic waves to a solid 8ft day, because you will not be picking conditions from a nearby villa. The one and a half degree channel crossing can get rough, so plan the boat run in settled weather and have your sea legs ready.
Solo sessions are the norm here. Koodhoo sits in a remote stretch of North Huvadhoo Atoll and is surfed almost exclusively by boat crews passing through. There is no local surf community applying pressure to the lineup, so paddle out and take your time.
Boat access only. No parking, no facilities, no shore infrastructure whatsoever. This is a deep-south Maldives mission, typically reached as part of a liveaboard or surf charter running between Malé and the southern atolls. Stock the boat well. The crossing of the one and a half degree channel can be rough in stronger trade winds, so time departures carefully.
Gaafu Alifu hosts other scattered reef setups including Viligili in the same atoll. Farther into Gaafu Dhaalu (South Huvadhoo Atoll), a dense cluster of breaks including Beacons, Two Ways, Love Charms, Blue Bowls, and Castaways offers far higher consistency and variety when the swell is running.
