A deep-water submerged reef peak on the west coast of Thaa atoll, Bowling Alley throws up a punchy, scenic wave that closes out hard onto the inside reef when it gets going. SW to S swells are the trigger, with easterly winds keeping the faces clean. The optimum size window runs 3-10ft, and the wave works across all tides, though the close-out tendency becomes more pronounced as swell size increases. Intermediate surfers will find enough room to operate, especially when the lineup is as quiet as it typically is out here. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: southern hemisphere swell season, roughly April through October. Consistency: medium. Bring a step-up for anything over 6ft, the close-out sections punish hesitation and reward surfers who can commit early and pull out cleanly.
This part of Thaa atoll sees very low traffic. Most surfers in the area are aboard liveaboards, so the crowd situation fluctuates with boat schedules rather than local paddlers. Dawn sessions before the boats reposition can deliver near-empty lineups. No localism concerns, but share the boat etiquette and you will be fine.
Access is by boat only. There is no parking, no beach access, and no facilities on-site. Water, food, and equipment should be managed from your liveaboard or resort. Bring reef booties given the submerged reef bottom and standard Maldives hazards around coral. Water is warm year-round, boardshorts and a rash guard are sufficient for most visitors.
When Bowling Alley is closing out or the swell angle is off, Adonis offers a sectioney right to the east that favours N winds. Mikado inside the atoll provides a more protected wraparound right from mid to high tide and is worth checking if conditions deteriorate on the exposed west-facing coast.
