One of the Indian Ocean's most consistent right-hand reef points, Sultans breaks off the eastern reef of North Malé Atoll and handles swells from small to well overhead without shutting down. SE swell is the magic ingredient, and the wave holds its shape under the SW monsoon winds that ruin most rights in the region, making it a reliable call from April through August and beyond. Mid to high tide smooths out the entry, but the wave runs at most stages. Intermediates through experienced surfers can all find a rhythm here, though the lineup is unquestionably heavy, over 100 surfers on a busy day across a fleet of charter dhonis and resort boats. Bottom: coral reef. Season: March through October. Consistency: high. Bring a helmet and booties for the reef, and calibrate your expectations around sharing sets with a lot of motivated travelers.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Sultans is the most surfed wave in North Malé Atoll. Expect boat traffic and a full lineup from May to October, with local Maldivian surfers adding weight on weekends. Aggression levels vary by which charter crews are in the water. Patience and respect move things along. If your boat drops you into a already stacked peak, surf the scraps first and earn your position.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only, via dhoni from a resort or charter safari boat. No beach entry, no parking, no onshore facilities. Water quality is clean. Wear reef booties, and consider a helmet on the inside section. Sun protection matters in tropical overhead glare.

Nearby Alternatives

Honky's breaks on the opposite side of Thamburudhoo Island as a complementary left when the right isn't firing. Lohi's to the north has hosted WQS events and offers longer, more powerful walls for experienced surfers. Chickens delivers long, playful lefts with occasional barrel sections when Sultans is too crowded or too small.
