Scar Reef earns its reputation as one of Sumbawa's most respected barrels, tucked into the north-side lee of Benete Point facing Jelinggah village on West Sumbawa's coast. SW swell at 5ft or bigger is the entry price, and the spot holds well beyond double overhead when the ocean delivers. Prevailing SE trades blow side-offshore here, meaning prime April-to-September season often arrives with near-perfect wind angles. Crowds depend almost entirely on how many surf charters are anchored in the bay: some mornings you share it with two boats, others you have it to five friends. Bottom: coral reef, notoriously sharp. Season: April-September. Consistency: high when swell is running. The wave opens with a freight-train take-off, pitches a thick lip immediately, then throws multiple backdoor sections that demand precise positioning and committed speed all the way to a sketchy inside closeout. Bring leash backups and a solid first-aid kit.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The village vibe at Jelinggah is welcoming and there is effectively no localism from the water. The real crowd variable is surf-charter traffic, which can stack several boats in the bay simultaneously during peak season. Dawn-patrol positioning before the first charter transfers matters more here than politics. Respect the reef, respect the boats already anchored.

Access & Facilities

Boat charter is the standard access, with a paddle-out exceeding 20 minutes from any shore entry. No parking, no facilities, no food or water on site. Everything you need comes from your vessel. Ultra-sharp, shallow reef is the primary hazard along with heavy barrel sections that can hold you down unexpectedly. Booties are strongly advised.

Nearby Alternatives

When Scar is too small or crowded, Downtowns offers less critical peaks a short boat ride away. Super Suck in Maluk Bay continues the West Sumbawa theme of deep-channel slabs for those chasing bigger, heavier surf.
