A top-to-bottom right-hand barrel breaking over flat coral reef inside Hu'u Bay, Periscopes is one of the more accessible heavy waves in the Lakey Peak cluster on Sumbawa's south coast. It demands a solid S to SW swell, ideally 4ft and above, and needs mid to high tide to keep water over the reef so the inside section doesn't go ledgy and shallow. NE to E winds keep it glassy most mornings, though sideshore conditions can set in by mid-morning. Natural footers will find this wave rewarding, but the combination of a short paddle from the beach and high-season crowds means the lineup fills fast. Bottom: flat coral reef. Season: May through October. Consistency: high during swell season. Bring a rounded-pin shortboard or step-up for anything above head-high, and arrive at dawn on a rising tide to claim a position before the pack arrives from nearby accommodation.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most accessible barrels in the Lakey cluster, which is a double-edged situation. A clean channel paddle-out and proximity to accommodation mean crowds build quickly from mid-morning. Localism is described as competitive but manageable. The lineup rewards experienced surfers who understand barrel positioning. Do not drop in. Dawn sessions are your best shot at meaningful tube time without the shoulder-to-shoulder pack.

Access & Facilities

Reach Periscopes by boat from Lakey Peak accommodation or on foot, roughly 40 minutes walk west of Lakey. The paddle-out is only about 100m through a clear channel. There are no facilities, no parking, and no services on site. Hazards are crowd and exposed reef. Flat water reef walking and shallow inside sections are the main physical risks, so booties are worth considering for reef protection after a wipeout.

Nearby Alternatives

When Periscopes is either too crowded or not firing, Lakey Peak sits a short distance east with both left and right options for a wider range of surfers. Lakey Pipe, 400m south of the Peak, offers a gnarly short-barrel alternative when SW swell is pumping. Cobblestones, accessible by zodiac or a longer walk, is worth checking if you want distance from the main Lakey crowds.
