Lakey Peak fires as a hollow, punchy A-frame reef break on the south coast of Sumbawa, Indonesia, with lefts that wall for solid distances and rights that are shorter, gnarlier, and legitimately backdoor-able. Both peaks throw top-to-bottom, giving intermediate-to-advanced surfers ample tube time when the SW swell is running. Optimal size runs shoulder-high to triple overhead, and the wave rarely goes flat, catching a wide range of swell. High tide tends to favor the shape, and the lineup is glassy or NE-offshored in the mornings before onshores build around 10am. This is a heavy, crowded lineup where localism is present but manageable if you paddle out with respect, read the pecking order, and don't snake sets. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to October, with March-April offering lighter crowds and cleaner winds despite smaller swell. Consistency: high. Get in the water at dawn to claim your space before the wind turns and the crowd doubles.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a genuinely heavy lineup. Crowds are serious seven days a week, with the peak inside and outside peaks both drawing surfers from the surrounding camp of bungalows. Localism is rated intense but doable. Paddle out calm, wait your turn, and don't over-surf your ability level on the right. Reef cuts and getting caught inside during a set are real consequences here.

Access & Facilities

Fly or ferry into Sumbawa, most routes ending in Bima, then arrange a transfer to Lakey Beach. The wave breaks directly in front of the beach accommodation strip, with a paddle-out available through the reef channel. Multiple bungalows and guesthouses line the beach at varying price points. Cold drinks, food, and motorbike hire are available locally.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lakey Peak is maxed out or too crowded, Periscopes sits close by and offers a high-quality alternative worth checking. The broader Lakey Beach area has several other reef options within easy reach that can provide relief on busy days.
