A small island off Bali's southeast coast, Nusa Lembongan holds three distinct reef breaks that reward surfers willing to make the short boat crossing from Sanur or Padangbai. Playgrounds is the entry point: a protected A-frame bay producing a longer left and a punchier right, workable for solid intermediates on S to SW swell from 3 to 8ft. Lacerations sits 500m offshore, a hollow barreling right that fires at mid to high tide over a sharp, shallow coral shelf, the name is earned. Shipwrecks peels a long right toward the channel, named after a stranded crane barge, big-barrel takeoffs and an 80m ride make it the island's showpiece when it's on. E to SE winds blow offshore through the dry season, keeping conditions clean from May through October. Bottom: reef. Season: May to October. Consistency: reliable during dry season swells. Wear booties at Lacerations and Shipwrecks, a hold-down on shallow coral is not a small problem.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Playgrounds and Shipwrecks draw the most traffic, including day-trippers from Bali who know the name. Expect a busy lineup on any clean dry-season morning. Lacerations sees fewer surfers, partly because it asks more and partly because the paddle is longer, use that knowledge wisely. No reported heavy localism, but standard respect protocols apply in a crowded channel.

Access & Facilities

Fast boat from Sanur (roughly 30 min) or slower public ferry from Padangbai. All three breaks are accessed by local boat from the island's main beach. Warungs, surf shops, and accommodation are easy to find in the main village. Bring reef booties, a reef-safe first-aid kit, and a step-up board for bigger days. Strong currents run between breaks, know your exit before you paddle out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lembongan is blown out or flat, Nusa Ceningan's right-hander across the channel picks up a similar swell and can offer a quieter session. Deeper into the dry season, Uluwatu and Padang Padang on Bali's Bukit Peninsula are the benchmark comparisons for quality and size.
