A punchy lava reef right-hander on Bali's east coast, Keramas delivers hollow barrels and a steep performance wall that has drawn professional contests and serious surfers for years. It picks up S and SW swell best, with the reef coming alive from 3ft and holding well past 8ft on bigger pulses. Offshore winds run NW, meaning the dry-season trade winds that batter the east coast often blow onshore, so dawn sessions are your best window before thermals kick in. Mid to high tide is the preferred range, opening up the barrel section and softening the shallower inside reef. Intermediate surfers can manage the place on smaller, cleaner days, but the hollow take-off and punishing close-out section inside demand genuine experience when size builds. The crowd is consistent and heavy, dominated by Komune Resort guests, competitive local surfers, and surf guides bringing groups of paying clients. Bottom: lava reef with coral and some sand from the nearby rivermouth. Season: April through October. Consistency: high. Arrive well before sunrise to beat the pack and watch the current if the swell climbs above 6ft.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Keramas is one of the busiest lineups on Bali's east coast. Resort guests from Komune walk straight to the break, and surf guides regularly pack the peak with clients chasing set waves. Localism has been noted around prioritised guide-client arrangements. Forecasts rate the local vibe as welcoming overall, but dawn crowds are competitive. Respect priority, don't snake, and expect 25-plus surfers out on any decent day.

Access & Facilities

A signposted road off the main coastal highway leads to a parking area in front of the beach. Restrooms are available. The black sand beach fronts a short paddle to the lineup. Water quality is clean, with the nearby rivermouth occasionally affecting conditions after heavy rain. Shallow reef sections are the primary hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Keramas is too crowded or the swell is wrong, the east coast has a series of reef breaks within walking distance including Ketewel to the north. On bigger swells, Nusa Dua to the south can be a cleaner, less competitive option.
