Hollow, ledgy reef that detonates over shallow rock on Bali's southeast coast, Ketewel is a short, punishing left that demands serious commitment. It needs a solid 6ft of swell to wake up and holds into double-overhead-plus territory, jacking hard off the reef with fast, top-to-bottom barrel sections. Offshore winds from the east or southeast clean it up, and high tide is the only window worth paddling out on: low tide exposes the reef to a degree that makes wipeouts genuinely dangerous. The lineup stays small most of the time, a handful of experienced locals and the occasional traveling surfer who has done their homework, but weekends draw a bigger crowd than the wave comfortably supports. Bottom: shallow reef. Season: dry season, April through October, when SE trade winds groom the south swell. Consistency: low to moderate, needs significant groundswell energy to fire. Sharks have been reported in the channel, so stay alert and know your exit before you paddle out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet, often just a tight crew of regulars who know the spot intimately. Weekends spike noticeably. The wave does its own crowd control: the heavy takeoff and shallow reef filter out anyone underprepared. Respect the locals who surf this spot regularly, sit wide, and don't snake sets.

Access & Facilities

Ketewel sits east of Sanur along Bali's southeast coast. The break is not well-signed and takes some finding on the first visit. Facilities are minimal in the immediate area. The reef is sharp and shallow, so boots are worth considering. Reef booties and a helmet are not overkill here. Have a plan for getting out of the water quickly if the swell surges.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ketewel is too big, too small, or too sharky for your liking, Sanur's gentler reef setups offer a lower-consequence session. Keramas, a short drive north along the coast, is a higher-quality right-hand reef that handles similar swell and provides a more forgiving paddle-out channel.
