Canggu's black-sand beachbreak and scattered reef peaks deliver a surprisingly wide range of waves along the same stretch of Bali's southwest coast. S to SW swells fill in best from May through September, with E to SE trade winds holding the faces clean in the early hours before going sideshore by mid-morning. It faces more south than nearby Kuta, so it picks up swell more readily and tends to run a size bigger on the same day. Beginners find soft rolling shoulders on the inside sections, intermediate surfers work rippable peaks up and down the beach, and when solid S swells push overhead and beyond, the reef sections produce punchy barrels that demand some experience. Crowds are moderate but the vibe stays relatively relaxed. Bottom: sand over rock reef. Season: May–September. Consistency: reliable when south swells are running. Get in the water by 7am to catch glassy conditions before the trades kick in and chop the surface.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Canggu draws a cross-section of Bali's surf population: traveling surfers, longboarders, beginners in lessons, and ripping locals from the Kuta circuit who make the morning run when size is lacking further south. Localism is present but manageable. Respect the priority rules, be patient in the lineup, and avoid burning locals on the better peaks.

Access & Facilities

Beach parking is available and the spot is wheelchair accessible to the sand. Multiple surf schools, board rentals, and cafes line the strip, making it a self-contained session. Water quality is generally clean but can deteriorate after heavy rain due to runoff and sewage discharge. Check conditions after storms.

Nearby Alternatives

When Canggu is blown out or blown flat, Padang Padang and the Bukit Peninsula breaks to the south offer more swell-exposed reef options for experienced surfers. Beginners can fall back on Kuta's longer beach with more consistent shore-break foam.
