One of the Indian Ocean's premier left-hand reefs, St Leu breaks off the west coast of Réunion with a long, bending wall that hooks sharply into hollow, shallow bowl sections over coral. SW swells from April to October power the best sessions, with SE trade winds blowing clean and offshore on the inside section. Shoulder-high works in isolated sections, but the wave only truly links into its full 300m potential at overhead and above, rewarding committed surfers who can read a fast, shifting face. Shark risk here is real and well-documented: bull and tiger sharks patrol these waters, and local regulations and common sense should be respected without exception. Bottom: coral reef, shallow and sharp. Season: April to October. Consistency: medium. Pack a step-up for solid SW swells and leave the fun board at home. The paddle from shore is long, the current runs, and the lineup rewards surfers who give respect before expecting any in return.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals surf here every day and have a clear pecking order. The formula is simple: give respect unconditionally, never drop in, wait your turn. Crowds have historically thinned due to the shark situation, but core locals remain consistent and territorial. Dawn sessions and weekdays slightly ease the pressure. Intermediate visitors tend to get squeezed out of the prime section.

Access & Facilities

Park near town and walk through the casuarinas grove to the beach. No facilities on-site. The paddle-out is straightforward but long, and there is current to manage on the way back to the takeoff. Carry water. Nearest amenities are in St Leu town, a short drive or walk.

Nearby Alternatives

When St Leu is maxed out or the crowds are unbearable, Boucan to the north offers a fun, reliable left reef handling swell up to 10ft. La Digue's three sections occasionally link into a long left ride suited to intermediates. For something completely different, L'Hermitage Pass delivers a choice of reef setups in a natural lagoon reserve.
