A sand-bottom beachbreak on Reunion's west coast, Etang-Sale-les-Bains offers a rare change of pace from the island's typical shallow coral reefs. Best suited to smaller SW and S swells, this spot works from knee- to shoulder-high and fires when nearby reefs are simply too big to paddle out. The prevailing SE trade wind blows cross-to-offshore here, cleaning up the faces nicely. It's intermediate to advanced territory, not because the wave is technically demanding on smaller days, but because the shorebreak gets thick and violent as size builds, and shark activity is a real, documented hazard on this stretch of coast. Bottom: Sand. Season: April to October. Consistency: Very consistent, around 150 days per year. Bring a standard shortboard or a bodyboard for the heavier pits, and be honest with yourself about the shorebreak when sets are punching above shoulder high.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a mellow, thin crowd split between shortboarders, bodyboarders, and bodysurfers. Weekends draw more people. The local vibe is genuinely welcoming, but bodyboarders dominate when the beach is going heavy. Give respect in the shorebreak zone and share peaks generously.

Access & Facilities

Park near the break and walk in under the bridge. Access is public, easy to find, and directly in town. Water quality is clean. The critical hazard here is twofold: the shorebreak can snap necks on bigger sets, and this is an active shark zone. Swim and surf with awareness, particularly at dawn, dusk, and after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

St Leu, a short drive north, offers a more structured right-hand reef when swell is in the water. When Etang-Sale is closing out and the west coast is maxed, check the sheltered northern or southern corners of the island for size relief.
