A long linking left that unspools off a submerged reef wall at St Gilles, La Digue is one of Reunion's more rewarding rides when the three sections snap together. S to SW swell in the 3-8ft range is the sweet spot, with easterly trade winds keeping faces clean and offshore. It works across all tides, which adds to its consistency during the southern hemisphere swell window. The wave suits intermediates chasing fast, open-faced wall sections through the mid zone, but the inside barrel demands respect and a confident bottom turn. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium. Access is straightforward from the St Gilles jetty wall, but bring everything you need as there are no facilities and no parking on site, so plan your logistics before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are occasional rather than constant, which is a relative luxury on Reunion's west coast. That said, St Gilles is a well-known stretch and a pumping swell day will draw a competitive lineup. Respect the locals who surf this spot regularly, especially in the barrel section on the inside.

Access & Facilities

Enter from the jetty wall at St Gilles. There is no dedicated parking and no facilities at the break itself, so sort water, wax, and food before you arrive. The St Gilles town area has supplies nearby. Watch the reef carefully on your first session here, as a submerged reef bottom with solid swell demands a careful read.

Nearby Alternatives

If La Digue is too small or the swell window is off, the lefts of St-Leu further south fire on stronger SW swells and are worth the drive. L'Hermitage Pass offers a different mood entirely, with a choice between a long tube and a mellower wall option when conditions suit.
