A fast, consequential right-hand reef break sitting directly in front of the harbour wall on Réunion's west coast, La Jetée handles swell when most other spots shut down. SE to SW swells from 3-12ft hit the submerged coral shelf and produce a punchy take-off that demands commitment before opening into a speed-pump wall capable of throwing proper tubes when the wind swings into the N quadrant or drops light. Mid-sized swells in the 4-8ft range give the cleanest ride, but the wave stays rideable across all tides. This is an expert-only lineup: the coral shelf below is loaded with urchins, shark presence is a genuine factor on this coast, and the crowds that pack in during summer make priority battles intense. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: high consistency year-round, busiest summer months. Consistency: high. Bring a board you can drive through a fast wall and accept that a wipeout over live coral is a real outcome every session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

La Jetée pulls heavy crowds in summer when surrounding spots go flat, and it earns that traffic because consistency here is high. Expert-only conditions do filter the lineup somewhat, but expect a competitive pack on any decent swell. Respect the priority system, know your ability honestly, and don't paddle out if you can't handle a fast reef take-off under pressure.

Access & Facilities

No parking and no facilities at the break itself. The harbour wall is the landmark, sort your gear before you arrive. Urchin spines in the feet are a routine hazard on this shelf, so reef booties are worth considering. Shark risk on Réunion's south and east coasts is well documented, stay informed about current alerts before paddling out anywhere on the island.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Jetée is maxed out or overcrowded, the three waves at Trois-Bassins are reliable crowd and swell magnets nearby. St-Leu's famous left-hand reef is a short drive and offers a alternative when SW swells are running. Boucan's left reef is a more forgiving option in smaller conditions.
