A rare big-swell valve on the Basque Coast, Le Port fires inside St-Jean de Luz harbor on the Ciboure side only when most other regional spots have gone to pieces. It needs genuine XL groundswell, 12ft and above, to activate the reef and even then sessions are short, sharp affairs under 50m with a critically small take-off zone. SW to NW swells pushing into the bay find the reef at low tide, and offshore winds from the SE keep it clean. This is experienced-only territory: hollow, powerful sections over rock demand quick decision-making and solid tube experience. Weekday crowds are already heavy with locals who know each other well, weekends tip into ultra-crowded for what is, in reality, a handful of actual waves. Bottom: reef. Season: autumn and winter swells, roughly October through March. Consistency: rare. Arrive early, read the lineup before paddling out, and if it is not on, Ste-Barbe and spots across the Spanish border are nearby alternatives worth considering.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

For a spot that barely works, the lineup gets crowded fast. Locals are tight-knit and know exactly who belongs in the peak. Visiting surfers should watch first, stay respectful and patient, and accept that priority will naturally sit with the regulars who have put the time in waiting for these rare conditions.

Access & Facilities

The break sits right at the harbor entrance in town, so access is straightforward. St-Jean de Luz has full amenities close by. The in-town location means parking and crowds arrive quickly once word spreads that it is on. Watch for rock hazards and harbour debris in the water.

Nearby Alternatives

When Le Port is not working, Ste-Barbe handles smaller swells better and offers longer rides. The Spanish border spots a short drive south add further options across a range of swell sizes and directions.
