A reliable reef break on Reunion's west coast, Boucan splits into two very different waves over shallow coral. The left picks up SE to SW swell from 3ft and handles up to 10ft, with SE winds blowing offshore and the wave performing across all tides. The right is a different proposition entirely: it stays dormant in small swell, then jacks hard and barrels when size arrives, demanding respect and solid experience. Intermediates fill the left on any given weekend, making the lineup ultra-crowded, the right self-selects when conditions earn it. Bottom: coral reef. Season: year-round with SE swell. Consistency: high. Dawn patrol is the practical move here, particularly on weekends when the left becomes a shoulder-to-shoulder scramble and the risk of collision from out-of-control beginners is real.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Boucan is one of the busiest lineups on Reunion. The left draws beginners, intermediates and bodyboarders whenever swell shows, with weekend crowds reaching ultra-crowded levels. Surf discipline at this spot is mixed. Community reports a real collision risk from beginners who don't hold their boards. Keep head-on-a-swivel, especially on the inside.

Access & Facilities

Street access in the city, under five minutes on foot. No dedicated parking and no facilities on site. The reef is shallow coral, so booties are worth considering if you're unfamiliar with the bottom. The occasional shark presence noted behind the rock pool on the right is a genuine local warning, not folklore.

Nearby Alternatives

When Boucan is maxed out or too crowded, Cap Requin swings a left around a coral sweep in moderate swell and rewards high-tide sessions. L'Hermitage Pass, a short drive south, offers a more structured setup with both a tubing option and a longer wall, and generally spreads the crowd more evenly across its sections.
