A fast, shallow left-hand reef south of St-Leu, La Pointe au Sel trades the circus crowds of its famous neighbor for exposure to Reunion's relentless SE trades and an unforgiving coral bottom. It needs a solid SW swell to wake up, ideally 3-8ft, and performs best at high tide when there's at least some water over the reef. The SE wind that ruins most of Reunion's west coast actually blows cross-offshore here, cleaning up the face when direction is right. Advanced surfers only: the wave is critical, the reef is sharp and shallow, and there is no forgiving channel to regroup in after a wipeout. Bottom: reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: low. Shark activity is a genuine and well-documented concern on Reunion Island, check current local advisories before paddling out, regardless of conditions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is one of the quieter spots on the west coast, a direct contrast to St-Leu up the road. Locals are welcoming and the crowd is typically minimal. That said, when conditions align and St-Leu is maxing out, overflow surfers do appear. Dawn patrol sessions on SW swell days will give you the best window with fewest people.

Access & Facilities

Park roadside and walk in. No facilities, no amenities on-site. Bring water and reef booties: the coral is sharp and wipeouts here cost skin. Water quality is clean. Shark risk on Reunion is serious and not theoretical, check local agency advisories (Observatoire Requin Réunion) before every session.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Pointe au Sel is too exposed to SE wind or the swell angle is off, St-Leu to the north offers a left with more shelter and a proper channel. Etang-Salé handles the same SE wind as a cross-shore and suits windsurfers, while Trois-Bassins picks up swell when everywhere else is flat.
