A cluster of reef breaks anchors St. Gilles-les-Bains on Reunion's west coast, where the island's main holiday strip meets a genuinely varied surf zone. SW to S swells at shoulder-high to double-overhead are the sweet spot, with SE trade winds keeping faces clean on most setups, a few spots also work on N or NE wind. The area suits intermediate to advanced surfers, and the number of distinct breaks spreads the crowd across a moderate-density lineup on most days, though weekends and French school holidays tighten things up. Bottom: coral reef and rock. Season: April to October. Consistency: reliable through the southern hemisphere winter. The standout here is L'Hermitage, a heavy barreling wave that delivers serious tubes on both the left and right, and is considered particularly sharky, so read the local shark-alert systems before paddling out at any spot in this zone.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is markedly more relaxed than St. Leu. Families, visitors, and locals mix on the beach, and the local surf culture is welcoming provided you show basic respect in the water. Defer to local surfers in the lineup, acknowledge priority without drama, and you will have no problems. Weekends and school holiday periods bring the most pressure, dawn sessions spread things out.

Access & Facilities

Multiple parking areas and access points serve the zone, and the town itself is well-stocked with hotels, restaurants, and bars along the main strip. The beach at Boucan Canot is a social hub. Sea urchins are present in large numbers across the reef, so reef booties are worth considering. Sharp reef, submerged rocks, and an elevated shark presence, especially around L'Hermitage, are the primary hazards. Check local shark-alert platforms before every session.

Nearby Alternatives

St. Leu, a short drive south, is Reunion's most famous break and offers a classic long left point when SW swell is running. Further south, the island's exposed east coast picks up raw swell but is a different world in terms of conditions and access.
