A powerful, lengthy right-hander breaking around the southern tip of a barrier reef northwest of Namotu Island, Wilkes Pass earns its place as one of the longer waves in Fiji. It picks up W and SW swell most reliably from November through April, with E or NE winds keeping the face clean. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot, and the wave consistently runs a few feet bigger than neighboring Swimming Pools and Namotu Left due to its exposed position. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find plenty to work with, though the crowd builds fast when Namotu and Tavarua are fully booked. Bottom: exposed barrier reef, moderately shallow coral. Season: Nov-Apr. Consistency: moderate but fickle given its all-direction exposure. Bring a thruster in the 6ft to 6ft 4in range and consider a step-up when the swell pushes overhead, because this wave has real power and rewards fitness.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is friendly by Fiji standards, most people out here are traveling surfers on resort trips rather than protective locals. That said, the lineup fills quickly when nearby resorts are at capacity. Dawn sessions or smaller mid-week days are your best window for breathing room. Respect the drop priority and the reef will do the rest of the crowd-thinning work.

Access & Facilities

Access is by boat only, typically a short ride arranged through Namotu or Tavarua Island Resort. No paddling in from a beach here. Have reef booties on deck if your feet are sensitive, and treat any coral cuts immediately. Sharks are present, as they are throughout Fijian waters, so dusk sessions are best avoided.

Nearby Alternatives

When Wilkes Pass is closing out or the crowd is stacked, Swimming Pools offers a more forgiving right nearby, and Namotu Left flips the script for goofy-footers. Cloudbreak on Tavarua is the heavy-water option if you have the skill and the swell is pumping.
