A heavy open-ocean left barrel bending into a shallow reef pass off Fiji's Coral Coast, Frigate Pass is often compared to Cloudbreak for its raw, unfiltered power. It feeds on SW swell out of deep water and hits the reef with little warning, making paddle-out timing and wave selection critical. SE or glassy winds keep it clean. Best from March through September, with the heart of the swell season running April to October. Head-high to triple-overhead is the working range, but anything pushing past six to eight feet shifts the vibe from playful to serious fast. Intermediate surfers can sample it on smaller days, though advanced riders will be most at home when it starts standing up. Boat access only, 30 minutes from shore. Bottom: coral reef. Season: Mar-Sep. Consistency: reliable when swell is running, but can go too big to surf for days at a stretch. Bring a gun or a step-up if there's size in the forecast, and respect the reef on wipeouts.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a moderate crowd of surf tourists, particularly during the April-September peak window. Locals are welcoming and there is no notable localism pressure, but the lineup self-selects by ability when the swell builds. Bigger days thin the crowd naturally. Respect standard surf etiquette and the boats managing drop-offs.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only, roughly 30 minutes from the Coral Coast. Arrange transfers through a local resort or surf camp. Bring water, sun protection, and reef booties if your feet are soft. The reef is the primary hazard on wipeouts. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Frigate Pass is maxed out or too exposed, the Coral Coast has softer options closer to shore with less open-ocean exposure. Cloudbreak at Tavarua is the benchmark heavy left of the region if you want comparable power with resort infrastructure behind it.
