Cloudbreak is the eastern edge of a shallow coral reef pass sitting about a mile south of Tavarua Island, receiving undiminished Southern Hemisphere swell energy across open ocean fetch. Optimal conditions are S to SW swell at 5ft and up, ESE to E trade winds offshore, and it breaks on all tides though low generally sharpens the sections. The wave suits advanced to expert surfers only, even seasoned travelers find the speed and power of an outer-reef left significantly more demanding than mainland breaks. Bottom: coral reef. Season: February through October, peak April to September. Consistency: high when the swell window aligns. Bring a gun for anything over 8ft, pack serious sun protection, and carry your own water because there are no facilities on the reef.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup runs a rotation system, encouraged by the nearby resort culture: catch a wave, go to the back of the queue. On smaller swells crowds can stack up with 50-plus boats in the channel. When swell exceeds overhead, the crowd self-selects fast. Access requires a boat from one of the nearby islands and costs around $65 USD per person. Budget accordingly.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only, departing from Tavarua, Namotu, or nearby accommodation bases. No parking, no facilities, no surf shop on-island. Bring everything: water, high-SPF sunscreen, a surf hat, wax, and any medical supplies. The reef hosts sea snakes, stonefish, and occasional sharks. Reef rash is the most common injury. A rescue station with AEDs and bleeding kits is located nearby through the Adopt a Cove program.

Nearby Alternatives

Restaurants, breaking off Tavarua in full view of the resort, is the fallback when Cloudbreak is too big or the wind goes wrong. Namotu Lefts offers a more forgiving tapering wall for intermediate surfers on smaller swells. Swimming Pools on the far side of Namotu runs faster and hollower on the right day.
