A long, symmetrical right-hander peeling around a reef bend near Namotu Island, Swimming Pools stands out in a region otherwise dominated by heavy lefts. It works best on SW to W swell at head-high, with low to mid tide locking in the most consistent peel. West winds keep it clean. The wave suits intermediate regularfoots especially well, though the variety of sections means it can reward surfers across a wide range of ability. Crowd pressure is moderate when conditions are perfect, particularly if the boats are full of regularfoots, but the vibe stays welcoming. Bottom: shallow coral reef. Season: April through September. Consistency: reliable through the Fijian winter swell window. Bring reef booties as insurance against coral, exit the water well before dusk given tiger shark activity in the area, and leave no valuables unattended during the boat ride out. Access is by short boat ride from Namotu Island.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup sits at moderate crowd levels when it is firing, pulling regularfoots from Namotu and passing boats. The local vibe is welcoming and the atmosphere stays relaxed even on the better days. Dawn sessions or shoulder-season weekdays offer a quieter experience if you want more room on the walls.

Access & Facilities

Access is a short boat ride from Namotu Island or a long paddle for the determined. The reef is relatively shallow coral, so reef booties are worth packing. Sharks are a documented hazard, be out of the water before dusk. Sunburn is real this close to the equator, so high-SPF waterproof sunscreen is not optional.

Nearby Alternatives

When Swimming Pools goes flat or gets too busy, the Namotu area offers Namotu Lefts directly in front of the island, a punchy, hollow left-hander that suits experienced surfers when SW swell is running. Cloudbreak, a short boat ride away, handles bigger SW to W swell for those ready to step up significantly in power and consequence.
