A fast, hollow right reef off the Coral Coast that punches well above its short ride length. Located directly in front of Hideaway Resort on the Queens Highway, the wave draws from SE to SW swells and needs a northerly wind to hold shape. It works from knee-high up to 6ft plus, with mid to high tide keeping the shallow reef manageable. Intermediates and above will get the most from it since the take-off is quick and the barrel pitches hard over shallow coral, pinching and going throaty at head-high and above. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: medium. The SE trades that dominate this coast blow it out regularly, so check the forecast and score it on northerly windows before the wind switches. Wear a helmet and bring a fin repair kit since the reef is sharp and shallow hits happen fast. The paddle-out is roughly 500m from the resort, with rips running through the narrow channel that can assist entry if you read them correctly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are light, with only a few surfers out on most days. The vibe is mellow and the lineup friendly. Respect the take-off zone and be ready to go immediately since hesitation on this wave is penalised by the lip, not the locals.

Access & Facilities

Park along the Queens Highway in front of Hideaway Resort. There are no dedicated parking or surf facilities here. The paddle-out is around 500m. Wear reef booties or a rashguard over your lower body as cuts from the coral are common and get infected in tropical water. No water quality concerns reported.

Nearby Alternatives

When SE trades kill Hideaway, Vunaniu Pass has two rights including Shifties about 800m away. Pipes handles a moderate SSE swell well and lives up to its name with hollow sections. Serua Rights offers longer rides if you want something with more wall to work.
