A low-key beach break on a long black-sand strip near Golfito, Zancudo delivers surprisingly long rides in one of Costa Rica's least-crowded lineups. It picks up S to SW groundswell reliably, with the peak in front of Oasis on the Beach Hotel producing the most consistent walls. NE offshore winds groom the faces during the dry season from December through April. At 5-8ft it opens up proper long sections, and on good days rides stretch 300-500m down the beach. A-frames and beach peaks shift around with tide, but the wave is forgiving enough across all tides that timing is not critical. Suitable for intermediates and up on most days, though smaller, cleaner swells pull in beginners too. Bottom: sand. Season: Dec-Apr peak, but 150+ surf days per year make this one of the more consistent beach breaks in southern Costa Rica. Getting here requires either a 25-minute boat ride from Golfito or a 45-minute to 1-hour 4x4 drive on rough road. Bring your own supplies.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is genuinely one of the emptiest lineups in Costa Rica. Weekdays and weekends both register as empty, a rarity for any wave of this quality. The town is quiet and low-key. Respect that by keeping a low profile and not broadcasting the spot.

Access & Facilities

Reach Zancudo by 4x4 from Golfito (45-60 min on rough road) or by a 25-minute boat transfer. The town has basic grocery stores and inexpensive lodging and food. There are no surf shops or rentals to rely on. Bring all your own equipment, wax, and spares. Public beach access.

Nearby Alternatives

Pavones, one of the longest left-hand point breaks in the world, is roughly 45 minutes away and is the first call when a strong SW swell fills in. If Zancudo is blown out, Pavones' point geometry can handle more wind.
