Eclipse delivers lefts and rights off a rocky point and an adjacent beachbreak beside a rivermouth on Costa Rica's remote South Pacific coast. It handles a wide swell window from S through NW, though it really comes alive on peaky SW swell at 2-6ft during low to mid tide. The rocky point adds shape when the sandbar beside the rivermouth is groomed by seasonal outflow, making wet-season visits by boat the more reliable call. Intermediates will find plenty to work with on smaller days, the wave rarely draws a crowd this far down the coast, which is a genuine bonus. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: May through November for SW groundswell. Consistency: high for the region. Access is the main variable: the dry-season road is passable in a 4WD, but when rivers swell in the wet, a boat is the smarter approach, so plan logistics before you commit.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd pressure here is rare. The combination of a restricted-access road, genuine remoteness, and limited facilities keeps the lineup thin. That said, a handful of travellers know this wave well, so don't expect complete solitude on a solid swell day in peak season. Respect the few surfers already in the water.

Access & Facilities

The dry-season road requires a capable 4WD, in the wet season river crossings become impassable and a boat transfer is the practical option. Camping is available on-site. Bring your own food and water. There are no surf shops or rentals nearby, so arrive self-sufficient.

Nearby Alternatives

When Eclipse isn't working, Punta Banco to the south offers beachbreak peaks alongside reefbreaks worth exploring. Further north around Cabo Matapalo, Pan Dulce can produce Rincon-style right-point waves on a solid S swell, and Backwash offers fast hollow sections in the middle cove.
