One of the longest left-hand point breaks on the planet, Pavones wraps around a boulder-and-sand point deep inside Costa Rica's Golfo Dulce, roughly six to eight hours south of San José. It needs a genuine S to SSW swell to punch through the bay, which makes it fickle as hell, but when it fires the wave links bowl sections, a speeding hollow rivermouth stretch, and a longer mellower finish into the bay for rides approaching a kilometre. NE to E winds are offshore. Tides matter: smaller days want higher water to link the sections, while overhead-plus conditions clean up best at low tide and get hollow fast. The lineup suits all levels in theory, but the crowd is heavy and the local-expat crew protects the best set waves. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: March to October. Consistency: medium. Pack a step-up for bigger swells and accept that your legs will fail before the wave does.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd rated 8 out of 10. Heavy. The local and expat crew know every section and will sew up the best set waves from the top of the point. Modern forecasting means travellers arrive in numbers the moment a swell shows on the models. Respect the lineup, be patient, and don't snake. Taking off mid-point on a smaller day avoids the most competitive peak.

Access & Facilities

Pavones sits at the end of a rough road on the south side of the Golfo Dulce, nearest hub Golfito. The break is right behind the soccer field. 4x4 is strongly recommended, roads wash out regularly during the wet season, which coincides with the best swells. Basic accommodation, camping, and a cantina at the end of the point cover essentials. Shuttles and 4x4 taxis run from Golfito. Nature Air and SANSA fly from San José.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pavones is flat or too crowded, Pan Dulce to the south picks up the same S swell and offers a Rincon-style right point. Punta Banco further south has left and right reefs that work in similar conditions. If everything inside the Golfo Dulce is dead, Playa Carate near Corcovado National Park is more exposed and picks up smaller swells.
