Pan Dulce delivers a Rincon-style right point that can stretch well past 500m on a solid S or SW swell, peeling through multiple sections over a rocky reef inside the Golfo Dulce on Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. Optimal conditions come with S to SW swell from 3ft up to 12ft, offshore westerly winds, and the wave is reasonably forgiving across all tides. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find long mellow shoulders giving way to faster, zippier inside walls, though the wave is far less consistent than the headline reputation suggests, meaning when it does fire the lineup fills up fast. Bottom: reef. Season: May through October. Consistency: medium. Tiger shark sightings are well-documented here, so avoid early-morning sessions when sharks move into the bay, and be honest with yourself about the aggressive expat-heavy pecking order before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Because the wave fires infrequently, crowds concentrate hard when it does. A vocal crew of expat residents and Puerto Jimenez locals controls the peak. Respect the lineup order, do not drop in, and come already surfing well. Dawn patrol is discouraged for shark reasons rather than crowd reasons. Weekends reportedly stay relatively quiet by comparison.

Access & Facilities

The Cabo Matapalo area is reached via 4WD dirt roads that can be cut off by river crossings after heavy rain. Free parking is available and basic camping exists nearby. Alternatively, a boat from Pavones crosses the gulf and avoids road risk. No formal surf infrastructure. Bring your own water and food.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pan Dulce is flat, Playa Carate just before Corcovado National Park can pick up swell. Punta Banco at the end of the road offers beachbreak peaks alongside several reefbreaks. Playa Zancudo, sheltered deeper inside the Golfo Dulce, is a mellower option when bigger SW energy is running.
